Smart choices: Investigating microbusinesses’ interest in, and understanding of, smart meters [ 0.71 mb]

By the end of 2020, 53 million smart meters will be fitted in more than 30 million households and businesses across England, Wales and Scotland. However, Citizens Advice considers that microbusinesses do not fully understand the smart meter roll out and what that means for them as energy customers. As the statutory energy consumer champion, Citizens Advice advocates for these consumers and is a ‘critical friend’ of the rollout programme.
Previous research suggested there are many issues specific to microbusinesses which need to be resolved if they are to reduce their energy consumption and make the rollout a success.

This research set out to;

  • Understand what microbusinesses know, want and expect from smart meters;
  • Evaluate to what extent these needs are being met by suppliers;
  • Identify what steps (if any) are required to ensure microbusinesses understand and are in a position to make the most of the benefits smart meters bring.
