Tips for dealing with coronavirus-related money problems

If you have money problems because of coronavirus, help is available from the Citizens Advice service.

You might also be able to get help from your local council, landlord, mortgage company, bank or other lenders. These bodies should be understanding and flexible if you’re struggling to make payments because of coronavirus, so it’s worth speaking to them. 

Here are some useful tips on how to manage your finances if they’ve been affected by coronavirus.

Make a budget

Work out how much money you’ve got coming in and going out, so you know what you can afford. You can use our budget planning tool.

Avoid borrowing more

Try not to borrow more money to pay off what you owe, especially if you’re already struggling with bills.

Avoid firms advertising ‘debt consolidation loans’ or ‘80-90% debt write-offs under a government-approved scheme’. Quick solutions like these won’t solve financial problems and often lead to more difficulties later.

Check if you can get more money

Some benefits rules have changed recently, so you might be able to get more money from the government.

See if you can spend less

Check if you’ve got any savings or insurance that could cover your payments. Check your contract before you cancel any subscriptions, because you might be charged for the remaining months of the agreement.
